The Good
- Friendly and fairly knowledgeable live chat available right away when I wanted to ask them questions.
- Ability to easily choose whether you’d like to use PHP4, 5, or both (by naming your files .php4 and .php5, respectively).
- Easy editing of the php.ini configuration file through the administration panel.
- Scheduled (aka “cron”) jobs are easy to set up, just drop in the URL of the script you’d like to run. They are limited to every 15 minutes at the most frequent, however.
The Bad
- Messy signup process – at one point received an “internal server” error and had to use the back button to try again.
- Cumbersome vDeck administration panel makes pretty much every normal site setup and maintenance task harder than it needs to be. I can’t imagine trying to use that on a daily basis, or learning it if I were someone new to managing a hosting account.
- Poor documentation with links that lead you in circles and others that go nowhere.
- PHP must be enabled before using it, however this isn’t mentioned anywhere, and the error message you receive when it’s not enabled gives you no clues that it needs to be done. When you do discover it needs to be enabled on the account, that’s done in the CGI section, though no page there makes any mention of PHP.
- They don’t allow connections to outside servers, whether through MySQL, or remote file opens/includes, which is also not mentioned anywhere. Their support department stated that sockets would not work either, however they seemed fine in our tests.
Overall
Probably not a great choice for beginners, users who will be spending a lot of time in the control panel, or those who need some of those unavailable features mentioned above. But if you can live with a feature-limited and self-contained site, the hosting itself seems pretty stable, download speeds were quick, and you get great storage and transfer numbers for the price.
"You get what you pay for" would be my best description of iPower. It's pretty cheap, and as a result what you get out of it is pretty cheap too. They reset their passwords, sent me lots of junk mail trying to sell me other stuff, and after my year was up and they'd confirmed my account would be canceled, they charged my card again for another year! In fairness they did refund it the same day, but they shouldn't have touched the card to begin with (and I also lost $6.10 in the process due to currency conversions). |
