We've had a dedicated server with The Planet for a little over two years now, and overall a somewhat decent experience, with a few speed bumps along the way. Their Orbit management panel is very nice, displaying information about their network status, the server's hardware, etc. Network has been pretty good with only a few short outages. They're good about informing of any scheduled maintenance, and seems like a very stable and reliable company.
Last week we had the most frustrating 24 hours I've ever experienced with a dedicated server company, which includes Yahoo's botched acquisition of SimpleNet, and FortressITX/DedicatedNow's midnight move from NAC to their own datacenter across town, so I think that's really saying something! The full version is a three pager, but the brief version goes something like this: CPanel/WHM update stopped mail from sending or receiving through the server; took hours to get support to even look at it; support broke MySQL in their attempts to fix the Exim problems; CPanel support eventually was called in to fix the problem and did within a matter of minutes; twelve hours later we gave up on support and started manually rebuilding the MySQL user passwords and removing CPanel skeleton files that were inserted back into some sites; support blamed FlexCMS for the problem and left it at that (Wordpress and Cerberus sites were down too!), and for a final insult offered for a fee to help us fix the software that wasn't broken!
Stuff happens, but their support was horrendous to deal with, waiting hours between updates and at times outright lying to us. I think we deserve better for a $170/month server. You can do better than them, we will be soon! |
